Great Book for Group Study

We used this book in a Theravada study group as a overview to the Sutta Nikaya. It worked very well for us. We would read the commentary by Bhikkhu Bodhi and then read the relevant texts followed by discussion. I agree with the well written comments previously made by Ryan. I think everyone in our group benefited from our study of this selection. The book is organized in an interesting fashion that moves from the easier to more difficult concepts, just as the Buddha taught to newer versus more experienced followers.

A beautiful and accessible overview of the Dhamma

There are two ways of looking at any work of Buddhist literature. One is to view it from the outside, as an object situated in its hitorical and cultural milieu. The other, more inward, perspective is to regard its potential transformative effect upon its readers. From either one of these perspectives, this new work is remarkable. . . .Bhikkhu Bodhi's introductions to each chapter strung together would themselves serve as a beautiful and accessible overview of the Dhamma.

A roadmap for the Pali Canon

The Pali Canon, the collection of texts the Theravada regards as the Word of the Buddha, remains the authoritative source of inspiration for millions of Buddhist practitioners worldwide. While various English translations of the discourses (suttas) have certainly inspired me to apply myself to the teachings, it was not until I read this anthology that my understanding of the overall structure of the Canon came to life. Bhikkhu Bodhi, an American-born scholar-monk ordained in Sri Lanka and former president of the Buddhist Publication Society, offers an exceptional presentation of how the suttas can be assigned within a complete system, revealing the intentional patterns of the doctrine, the Dhamma. Selections from the five main collections of the Pali Canon are thematically organized into ten chapters conveying the full expanse of the Buddha s teachings, helping us to find our way through the jungle of the suttas. I found the editor s introductions preceding each chapter to be remarkable clarifications of the concepts relevant to these themes, and coupled with thorough endnotes that draw upon the classical commentaries of Acariya Buddhaghosa, these expositions have served as an excellent roadmap for my attempts to access the depth of the Canon.
