In the Buddha's Words contains selected discourses from the Pali Canon designed to reveal the outline and breadth of the Buddha's teaching. This is a masterful collection of Venerable Bodhi's lucid translations that allows even readers unacquainted with the teachings to grasp the significance of the Buddha's contributions to our world heritage. Taken as a whole, these texts bear eloquent testimony to the breadth and intelligence of the Buddha's teaching and point the way to an ancient yet ever-vital path.
Bhikkhu Bodhi, an
American-born scholar-monk ordained in Sri Lanka and former president of the Buddhist
Publication Society, offers an exceptional presentation of how the suttas can be assigned
within a complete system, revealing the intentional patterns of the doctrine, the Dhamma.
Selections from the five main collections of the Pali Canon are thematically organized
into ten chapters conveying the full expanse of the Buddha’s teachings, helping us to find
our way “through the jungle of the suttas.”
I found the editor’s introductions preceding
each chapter to be remarkable clarifications of the concepts relevant to these themes, and
coupled with thorough endnotes that draw upon the classical commentaries of Acariya
Buddhaghosa, these expositions have served as an excellent roadmap for my attempts to
access the depth of the Canon.
