On March 7, 2021, Dr. Paul R. Fleischman, former psychiatrist, Vipassana teacher in the tradition of S.N. Goenka, and author, joined us online for an author talk with Q&A on the second edition of his book Vipassana Meditation and the Scientific Worldview.

In this book Dr. Fleischman draws from science (including chemistry, biology, psychology) illustrating the body sensations that Vipassana meditators focus on, in a judgement-free, non-reactive way, to be manifestations of universal laws that govern the whole universe.

After reading an overall summary of the book and an excerpt of one of the essays, the author and his wife Susan are joined by fellow Vipassana teachers Kathy Henry and Ben Turner for an engaging conversation, touching on several interesting topics such as how previous teachers in our tradition saw the bridge between the philosophy of the Abhidhamma and the Western scientific way of thinking, and how both the gross and the subtle sensations relate to our physiology.

The last 20 minutes of the two-hour long event is dedicated to answering some of the very relatable questions from the audience.

Testimonials:

"Listening to Paul respond to questions...his ability to reframe and respond is sublime."
"The summary of the book by Paul struck me most powerfully. It is a marvellous book!"
"I appreciated the reminder that science does not deal in absolute truths and expects change over time."
"... many of those [audience] questions/thoughts resonated with mine."
"I most enjoyed being exposed to the depth of thought from those with so much more experience with Vipassana and relating it to science and living."
