Description

The present PDF eBook, Theragathapāli, belongs to the Khuddaka Nik ya of the Sutta Pi aka of the Pāli Tipi aka. Tipi aka literally means three heaps/collections/baskets, namely Sutta Pi aka, Vinaya Pi aka, and Abhidhamma Pi aka.

Various books in the Khuddaka Nik ya, verily in all of Tipi aka, belong to different strata when they were compiled or added to the Pāli canon. Evidently Theragathapāli belongs to the oldest strata. For an overwhelming majority of the elder bhikkhus, as the endnotes and appendices indicate, there is ample evidence for them having lived during Lord Buddha s lifetime. It should be borne in mind that, while discussing the topic of antiquity, parts of a given book could be later than the general age assigned to that book.

I hope this translation is helpful for those looking to obtain a flair, a pre-taste of what it must have been like to be freed from the defilements and be completely liberated. If this translation inspires even one reader to live by these ideals, then this translation has served, indeed well-served, the purpose.

In this book, both Pāli originals and English translations are provided so it's easier for those who want to learn Pāli or just read the translations. A full Pāli-English Glossary and detailed Endnotes will help the interested reader to learn more about the teachings.
