We have lived in an era during which the spirituality intrinsic to science has become obvious.

The universe is not random. It contains patterns and paths. This is called the information-state of the universe, and it organizes the materials and energies that form our bodies and minds. We are each microcosms; downloaded into our small selves are a vast array of directives and limits, the laws of science, that govern stars as well as our hearts and minds. We can gain access to some of the wisdom of this universal, lawful reality through meditation. As we observe our body sensations with equanimity, we come in contact with basic laws of physics, like entropy, or the decay of aggregates over time, and we also encounter basic laws of psychology, like the fact that social love, Mett , leaves us happier than anger or fear. We may become self-balanced to face contingencies.

It is science, not mysticism or religion, that reveals the value of Vipassana as a vestibule to ultimate realities, and highlights it as a practical guide to the psychology of well-lived lives. We are each unique snowflakes, patterns and lace, melting in the cosmic storm. We arise and pass inside a universe, a web, a Dhamma. We become aware of the scriptures that are inscribed inside us and that guide our wellbeing.

Deep, technical & inspiring essay

This is a re-reader, and not one to read in one sitting, (at least not for me). I find myself reading a paragraph a few times to grasp its implications. This puts into a context for me our (at least my own) thirst for intellectual understanding, whilst relating to actual practice, yet toying with the boundaries of the intellect. Dhamma is so simple as a wordless practice, and yet so unfathomably complex and deep. A lifetime of work and reflection is contained in this essay, and it is no small task to have put into words the realities of the universe and relate them to our experience and practice of Vipassana in an intelligible form. There's like a bending-of-the-mind when such realities are mentioned in the essay, like the 4 billion years of stored-up information bits in our DNA, and the aggregated complexity of scientific law, are put into a context that I can actually relate or at least think I can relate to. To actually ponder this and understand this intellectually, then sit, without just thinking about the words but somehow putting an added context to sensations and the mind, is wonderful in its own right. In the chapter about complexity, what struck me most is the paragraph coming to the phrase "The order of complexity within us is such that self-observation can arise." It's just another way for me to understand anatt . We're just unfathomably complex jumbles of phenomena somehow maintaining a continuity as some kind of "existance" or more a process. I just love the contrast for me being absorbed in such grand concepts and then going on to brush my teeth and clean out the kitty litter box, and shutting my eyes, head on my pillow knowing I will soon drift off into an absolute oblivion, where it all continues to take place regardless of my awareness of it.

Treasure trove for dhamma scientists and thinkers in the modern era

I am a PhD student in Geophysics studying the evolution of Earth over millions of years. I am also interested in cosmology, life and all the big questions that are usually taken for granted in this modern society. All these years, I could not see how these scientific issues relate to the dhamma and my daily practice of vipassana. In this book, Dr. Fleischman has explained all these issues with such a clarity that I have never found anywhere else. This book has cleared many of my doubts relating to dhamma and religion/modern science and this understanding also improved my practice. I sincerely thank Dr. Fleischman for writing this book and also the Q&A session with Susan, Kathy and Ben. It was enlightening to hear you people discussing the book!
