Description

The eminent German scholar-monk Ven. Nyanatiloka Mahathera (1878-1957) was the first Continental European in modern times to become a Buddhist monk and one of the foremost exponents of Theravada Buddhism in the 20th century. The four lectures contained in this 76-page booklet comprise a clear and succinct basic primer on the essence of the Buddha's teaching, as handed down to us in the Buddhist scriptures in the Pāli language. The author elucidates the Four Noble Truths, Kamma and Rebirth, Dependent Origination, and Mediation. The unmistakable authority which he brings to discussing the most fundamental but difficult issues in the correct understanding of the Buddha's teaching are grounded in his practice of 54 years as an ordained monk and his wide scholarship of texts of the Theravadin tradition. This booklet is a helpful exposition for both newcomers as well as practitioners of the Dhamma.
