Description

The author of this book, Nynatiloka Thera, the eminent German scholar-monk, was one of the best known Buddhists in the late 19th and early 20th century. This small book (100 pages) contains an "outline of the teachings of the Buddha in the words of the Pali Canon." It is organized around the Four Noble Truths with small commentaries from time to time to better explain the selected texts. The selected texts form a connected whole, linking every chapter in a logical way.

After reading this book, you might want to look into another anthology, also written by Ven. Nyanatiloka, The Buddha's Path to Deliverance. With twice the number of pages, it contains a more detailed selection of texts and commentaries of important Buddhist topics.

Great Basic Buddha

This has long been my best refresher for and about the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha. While it may not be exactly suitable for a new person just investigating Buddhism, it is great for someone who wants to learn more especially an introduction to the Pali language. The fact that this book was first published in 1907 gives credibility to its Theravada orthodoxy roots. A must-have book.

Excellent Ouline of The Buddhist Path

This little manual can serve as a reference for a beginning or advanced student or practitioner alike. It includes among other things the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, unwholesome/wholesome actions, and dependent origination with a useful diagram. Most of the book is taken from the suttas and the author's interspersed commentary is concise and insightful. If I had to pick one book less than 100 pages to take to a desert island, this would be high on the list.
