Author and psychiatrist Paul Fleischman explores the interface between psychiatry, science and the timeless teaching of the Buddha in Karma and Chaos. Eight new and collected essays by Dr. Fleischman in this thoughtful work probe the heart of the Buddha's legacy to humanity: self-correction through meditation. Drawing on his many years of practice as a therapist, and as meditation student and teacher, he guides us with authority and humility into the essence of Vipassana meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka, its psychological benefits and perils, and the inextricable foundation of moral actions.

The complete book is also available in print in French, Italian, Serbo-Croatian, and Spanish. In English the title is also available as an eBook; in French we offer an audiobook as well. See Related Items below.

Breathtaking

Seldom have I come across such a combination of eloquence and accuracy. Very relevant issues, and never repetitive. Really interesting to have a psychiatrist's point ot view. There are even some rare pieces of information in the last chapter. Wonderful read!

A Masterpiece!

I am grateful to Paul R. Fleischamn for writing this book. It is at once poetic and enlightening. I think Karma and Chaos will appeal to the seasoned meditator as much as it would one who has just begun to practice.

Amazing book

I read this book after having practiced vipassana for almost 2 years and could very much relate to the beneficial healing qualities talked about after myself suffering from a diagnosis of schizophrenia for about 10 years to be now medication free and never happier in my life. It was reading the last essay though.... the books title... that gave my understanding a new dimension. Absolutely enlightening.

Ancient Doctrine Examined by Modern Theory

In Karma and Chaos a scholar (professor/psychiatrist/meditation teacher) and his son examine the ancient doctrine of karma in the light of modern Chaos (Complexity) Theory. Though most religious and moral philosophies express a belief in some law of "you reap as you sow," from the limited perspective of an individual this seems to be contradicted by accidents, luck, and a cosmology that is not scientifically verifiable. The idea that there might be a higher moral law that functions independent of capricious, supernatural powers in a complex but rational way is intriguing. In this book the complexities of karma are made more intelligible, even rational, by applying an overview of Chaos Theory. This helps one transcend the limited linear rationality of the individual and examine karma within a cosmic framework. On November 20, 2010, Paul gave a talk at MIT, "Vipassana Meditation & The Scientific World-View," in which he elaborated on Complexity Theory in depth and showed how it permits an integration of causality (determinism) and creation (free will). Whatever your views of karma, Karma and Chaos provides unique and interesting insights. And it's only one of eight essays in the book.

A Superb Book

If the Buddha returned to scan the English-speaking world for a spokesperson with the psychological range of an eminent psychiatrist, the descriptive powers of a poet and meditative experience, his eye would certainly fall upon Paul Fleischman. Karma and Chaos probes the very heart of the Buddha's legacy to humanity--self-correction through meditation--and in a language as beautifully precise as it is free of jargon. This is a superb little book, a mature and beautiful flower from one of the past century's truly important developments: the reseeding of the Buddha's ancient teaching in a western and global context.
