VIPASSANA PRODUCTS

Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. More information about Vipassana as taught by S.N. Goenka is available at www.dhamma.org.

The tag Vipassana identifies products that are directly related to this tradition and differentiates them from other Theravada resources available on our site. While the main emphasis in Vipassana meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka is on actual practice, this product may provide inspiration and guidance to a Vipassana meditator.

We also carry titles from the Theravada tradition, as we feel that by exploring the wider world of the Theravada texts, which include the Buddha’s discourses, commentaries, and scholarly articles and treatises, meditators have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Dhamma and thereby enrich their meditation practice. This kind of intellectual exploration also helps a meditator to gain an understanding of the evolution and historical context of their meditation tradition. This understanding in turn deepens their practice and understanding of the Dhamma.

Q: Why have you decided to partner with Amazon for the printing and distribution of your books?

A: Pariyatti is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to help disseminate the words of the Buddha.

The generosity of our customers and donors (donations make up ~25% of our revenue) is what has allowed Pariyatti to cover our annual shortfall, and permitted us to continue operations. We strive to continue to find ways to make best use of this hard-earned money, generously donated by so many to Pariyatti. One of these is to explore ways to optimize our operations.

Our goal is to disseminate Dhamma content. The choice of working with a given distribution partner is solely based on whether they can provide you, our customer (no matter where you live) with the item(s) you ordered in an accurate, timely, and reliable manner.

With the advent of eBooks and the internet, the entire book publishing and distribution industry has faced significant challenges. With these industry changes, and Pariyatti's additional challenges in serving a niche market with low sales volumes, it has been financially difficult to staff our own warehouse and operations. Year after year, the costs of maintaining our own warehouse has far exceeded the income.

By focusing on what we do best (such as make Dhamma content available at low or no cost), and partnering with others who have already built robust printing, packing, and delivery systems, we free up resources that can be redirected towards expanding Pariyatti's offerings for you.

We are always on the lookout for creative ways to make Dhamma content as widely and freely available as possible. If you have any ideas along these lines, please feel free to be in touch via [email protected] .

Buddhavacana (trans. "the word of the Buddha") is a comprehensive Pali reader intended to enable a student to move directly into reading the Pali Nikayas. Author Glenn Wallis has selected sixteen suttas, each comprising a section of the book. After each sutta are blank pages where the student can write down their own rendering; a word-by-word guide to the sutta, with brief grammatical annotations; and at the end of the whole book, polished translations by Wallis himself of all the suttas offered for study.

A familiarity with basic Pali grammar is recommended; A Pali Primer by Lily De Silva is an excellent guide for this purpose.

An excellent workbook
Buddha Vacana is an excellent workbook for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of Pali canonical literature. Suttas Glenn Walls has selected for this book from Dighanikaya, Majjhimanikaya, Samyuttanikaya and Anguttaranikaya represent not only the four major Nikayas but also core teaching of the Buddha. Even though there are quite reliable translations of these Suttas, should anybody have any doubt about these translations, she or he can verify the meaning if he or she has a good knowledge of Pali. Careful study of these Suttas, as presented in this book, serves multipurpose— learning Pali, Dhamma and instruction on meditation. For these reasons, without any hesitation, I would highly recommend this book to anybody interested in Pali, Dhamma and meditation.

Very practical
Glenn Wallis has put in a wonderful effort to produce this Pali reader to encourage the study of the language of the most complete early Buddhist canon. I think he has chosen a good selection of discourses (suttas), which conveys important aspects of the Buddha’s teaching from his own words. Certainly, encouraging knowledge of early Buddhist texts and intelligent and critical investigation of them, would be welcomed by the Buddha. Intelligent and critical investigation is definitely encouraged by the Buddha in such texts as the Discourse in Kesamutta (our text number four). The Buddha is quoted as saying: “make a thorough investigation” in Majjhima Nikaya sutta number 56 and the context makes clear the Buddha was referring to his teaching, not just meditative investigation. Space is given to translate each discourse directly after it, then a glossary for that particular discourse. Lastly Glenn Wallis gives his own translation of the discourses at the end of the book. Putting the glossary for each discourse so close to it, is very practical.

Coming closer to the Buddha
As more people in English speaking countries become interested in Buddhism, they demand to know what the Buddha actually taught. The only way to find out is to read the earliest texts in the earliest language, which means learning Pali. When, as a young monk, I learned Pali, I discovered it was not that difficult. Once I could read the Pali texts myself, a whole rich new dimension of teachings opened up for me. It was like I was coming so much closer to the Buddha. Therefore I strongly recommend this book. May it help others understand what the Buddha really taught.
