VIPASSANA PRODUCTS

Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. More information about Vipassana as taught by S.N. Goenka is available at www.dhamma.org.

The tag Vipassana identifies products that are directly related to this tradition and differentiates them from other Theravada resources available on our site. While the main emphasis in Vipassana meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka is on actual practice, this product may provide inspiration and guidance to a Vipassana meditator.

We also carry titles from the Theravada tradition, as we feel that by exploring the wider world of the Theravada texts, which include the Buddha’s discourses, commentaries, and scholarly articles and treatises, meditators have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Dhamma and thereby enrich their meditation practice. This kind of intellectual exploration also helps a meditator to gain an understanding of the evolution and historical context of their meditation tradition. This understanding in turn deepens their practice and understanding of the Dhamma.

Why Amazon

Q: Why have you decided to partner with Amazon for the printing and distribution of your books?

A: Pariyatti is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to help disseminate the words of the Buddha.

The generosity of our customers and donors (donations make up ~25% of our revenue) is what has allowed Pariyatti to cover our annual shortfall, and permitted us to continue operations. We strive to continue to find ways to make best use of this hard-earned money, generously donated by so many to Pariyatti. One of these is to explore ways to optimize our operations.

Our goal is to disseminate Dhamma content. The choice of working with a given distribution partner is solely based on whether they can provide you, our customer (no matter where you live) with the item(s) you ordered in an accurate, timely, and reliable manner.

With the advent of eBooks and the internet, the entire book publishing and distribution industry has faced significant challenges. With these industry changes, and Pariyatti's additional challenges in serving a niche market with low sales volumes, it has been financially difficult to staff our own warehouse and operations. Year after year, the costs of maintaining our own warehouse has far exceeded the income.

By focusing on what we do best (such as make Dhamma content available at low or no cost), and partnering with others who have already built robust printing, packing, and delivery systems, we free up resources that can be redirected towards expanding Pariyatti's offerings for you.

We are always on the lookout for creative ways to make Dhamma content as widely and freely available as possible. If you have any ideas along these lines, please feel free to be in touch via [email protected] .

You can also find these Wheels included in the book The Way to Ultimate Calm as well as in Collected Wheel Publications Vol. 24

Vol 1 - This booklet is part one of two, includes an introduction and three discourses translated from talks given by the revered Venerable Webu Sayadaw to groups of lay disciples in the Burmese countryside. Included is a photograph of the Sayadaw sitting cross-legged on a dais an image which conveys the deep peacefulness and dignity of this saintly person.
Ven. Webu Sayadaw (1896-1977) was one of the most esteemed Theravada Buddhist teacher monks of recent times.

Vol 2 - It is part two of two of the wheel series booklets of Webu Sayadaw's discourses. It features three discourses translated from talks given by the revered Venerable Webu Sayadaw to groups of lay disciples in the Burmese countryside. Included is a photograph of the Sayadaw and a discourse in which the respondent to the Sayadaw's questions (in question and answer didactic style) is Sayagyi U Ba Khin. The three discourses are entitled: "Extinguishing the Inner Fires," "Work Without Wavering," and "A Happiness that Ever Grows."

Exemplifying the strict adherence to a simple meditative life, he constantly stressed the need to walk the Buddha's path to its final goal right here and now, in this precious but fleeting human existence. He was notable in giving all importance to diligent practice rather than to scholastic achievement. His teachings are distinctive in their simple and potent practicality. They constantly point the listeners to apply the Buddha's instructions through the sustained effort of meditation. The Ven. Webu Sayadaw's discourses are therefore especially pertinent and inspiring to practitioners of meditation:
"The peerless Buddha penetrated all this with his own superknowledge and then was able to teach it. But what can we know for ourselves? We can know mind and matter simultaneously. And what will we get from this awareness? We will be able to understand the characteristic of their behavior. We needn't do anything special. Just practice as you are practicing now. Keep your attention focused on the spot and as you gain the ability to keep your attention with the awareness of breathing and the spot, mind and matter will talk to you." (p. 34)

"Sayadaw: If you live a life of laziness and sloth, will you become happy? Disciple: No, sir. I shall continue going round in the cycle of birth and death, sir. Sayadaw: 'I have never before, in the whole cycle of birth and death, had stiff and aching limbs because of meditation. It is good if I experience these troubles now.' Thus should you look at your pains. Even though your limbs ache, do not give up. Know that wise people of the past have walked on the same path.

"You have to work. If you only talk about putting forth effort, you will not attain anything. Only if you meditate can you come to understand. Now you are probably thinking: 'We want to meditate, but this venerable monk is talking for a long time.' So now focus your mind as the Buddha taught and meditate with firm effort and with perseverance." (p.46)

The Ven. Webu Sayadaw and Sayagyi U Ba Khin had close Dhamma ties. The Sayadaw was the person who first exhorted Sayagyi to teach meditation (see Sayagyi U Ba Khin Journal by Vipassana Research Institute, p. 89, "Venerable Webu Sayadaw and Sayagyi U Ba Khin").

5 Stars
wonderful book
Webu Sayadaw was one of the Dhamma Giants of our time. The book contains discourses given by him on different occasions. The discourses are in a form of dialog between him and the students. When I read these dialogs, I could almost hear him speak - so live and vivid. The Dhamma in the sayadaw, his knowledge experience and humbleness seems to flow from the book to me. Such an inspiration...
